Oil consumption 19:1

I finally measured my oil consumption vs gas consumption, 4.5 gallons and 30 ounces of oil, for a 19:1 ratio. I've read other comments here about high oil consumption, and my sled does seem to be in line with them.

Has anybody else measured how much oil they added compared to how much gas they used for a fillup?

Remember when they announced the 850 and said it would be better than the 800etec for oil consumption.. Then they sent out letters after people put money down on them that said they wouldn't be better than the previous 800, but on par with it.

Did they forget to send out the letters stating they would be worse on oil than the previous 800?

It's adjustable on BUDS, but remember oil keeps the engine alive and more oil makes more power...to a point. If you ride WFO a lot, that is a reasonable oil ratio to keep things alive.

Oil to fuel

I understand oil sealing and helping with compression but isn't 19-1 a little on the fat side ? Especially when riders who normally did ride the 800E-tec WOT pass after pass on the hill sidhilling WOT 20+ seconds. We have to let thies 850's breath a little more or you blow a belt a lot quicker. I think the race sleds are like 33-1 wouldn't that be sufficient?

That does seem to be the case.

If you ride WFO a lot, that is a reasonable oil ratio to keep things alive.

Yesterday was a deep day, lots of WFO, probably 17 miles of riding untracked and 5 miles of trail to get to it and get back down for a total of 10 trail miles.

When other guys had their side panel open to let clutches cool their oil level was about the same as mine so I don't have much reason to believe anything is wrong with my sled, but I was pretty shocked to calculate the ratio at 19:1

I'll gladly keep the oil tank full to avoid engine issues, but it is disappointing that the oil consumption is on par with sleds from 10+ years ago, sure, the 850 doesn't smoke like my 2007 Arctic Cat, but it uses just as much oil, maybe more, I never checked the oil/fuel ratio on that sled...

I'd even bet that my carbureted 1997 Arctic Cat 580 Powder Special uses less oil than my 850.

Don't forget about the lower clutch temps they also hyped for the '17.

Why don't they still have those selling points in their sales literature for the 18's?

Yeah, I hear ya, I run an 850 and an 800 eTec together with my son and the g4 uses about three times the oil of my XM. I haven't precisely measured it, but I will on the next trip.
19:1... my 70 Arctic Cat Panther used 20:1, a quart to five gallons, was pretty easy math for a kid back in the day. 19:1 in 2018, that's a downright embarrassing stat.
I run my Rev mod sled at 32:1, any lower and IMO your just over oiling..

I calculated my last tank 20:1. It was an easy riding day with 1ft of fresh over hero snow. Willing to bet it’s closer to 10:1 on deep days.

Living in Canada that translates to $1 of gas to $1 of oil. That’s freaking sad.

That plus the cost of belts is pushing the operating costs of this 850 to uncomfortable levels.

My buddy with 18 cat has gone through 1/3 of oil as me this season. Same miles.

I have two 850’s and they burn less then a half tank of oil per full tank of gas. Both still in break in. Rode the heck out of it last weekend in a couple feet of fresh powder.

"Full tank" being how many gallons of gas added at the pump? Owners manual says it holds 9.5 gallons.

I've checked gas mileage for most of my rides and there hasn't been much difference from the break in period to now, I currently have a little over 600 miles on my sled.

Rode today, really bad visibility, notably shallower snow, minimal WFO, and oil consumption was still 36:1.

Without spending an entire ride on a trail, I consider this to be the lowest oil consumption a guy could ever expect to get out of an 850.

I've been told my 1997 arctic cat should be running a 40:1 ratio when the oil pump is adjusted correctly.

With the lack of smoke on the Etec motors it's easy to assume they use minimal oil, heh....

Whats crazy is that the exhaust pipe on my 850 is dry on the inside, where does all the oil go? If I ran my 2 stroke dirt bike at 19:1 I'd have spooge running down my silencer and dripping onto the swingarm.

So I took my sled out yesterday, short ride at 6500 ft mostly playing in the meadows with about a foot of fresh on a firm base, took it real easy 90% was 5K to 7K maybe pinned it a couple of times jumping banks on the side of the trail. Rode 32 miles, used 4 gls of gas (8mpg), and 16 oz. of oil.
4X128=512 oz. of gas 512 divided by 16= 32:1 That's as easy as I'll ever ride this sled, pretty disappointing #'s considering Doo has always upped there mileage #'s through the years, particularly from the onset of the SDI to the 800 eTec. Seems they've gone bas ackwards.... 8mpg on the most technologically advanced sled out today ?... hmmm:yuck: # NOT IMPRESSED

Out last week with stock 850, long hard day used 33liters of fuel and 2.5 gallons of oil, tank was around 1/3 left, in two days it used over 4 gallons, $$$

My turbo 800 sleds run 1/3 the oil the 850 does threw them and stay together.. Every time I'm taking off in the deep, black streaks in the snow, will be pulling oiling number lower real soon.. 19-1 is crazy oil consumption for a two strokes..

Thanks for the numbers!

Oil never killed a motor...

With turbo charged automotive engines I've seen the turbo blow, and the oil pump pumps the engine oil into the intake and fills one or more cylinders far enough to hydrolock the motor and bend/break rods. Totally different than a doo motor, but oil can kill a motor :p

This thread is kinda funny.
Diamond S ti can: $600
Klim boots: $300
Klim pants: $350
SLP skis: $500+
Beers at the bar: $4.50 each
Aftermarket shock package: $1000-$3000
And you guys are complaining about how long a $40 bottle of oil lasts? (That actually makes a $4000 engine last longer?)
Shet, if it makes you that miserable then go buy a 96ZR580 and get the oil consumption that you want, see how much fun you have........
