To my understanding the 2.5" track should run better then the 3" track due to higher track speeds? Anybody monkey around with this at all?

3" track is hands down the best upgrade you can do for a sled regardless of motor or turbo. If you ride deep snow you're crazy not to run one.

I have been told by a respectable mechanic/snowmobiler (take it for what it's worth) that the 2.5 performs better on a stock motor. Sounds like you have a BB (872?) which he said is able to maintain that track speed with the 3."

I can tell you that in central MT snow a XM Doo 2.5" track doesn't begin to compare to a XM Doo 3" track. Ridden both tracks on both a 800 and 872. If you are talking Gen 4 2.5" or Poo 2.6" I have no first hand experience.

I have a 14 with a 2.5" and a 16 with a 3". I can't think of a single scenario I'd rather have the 2.5" in. MAYBE spring snow.

I’ve had both. Two 13 XMs with 872 and 2.5” and two 15 XMs with 872 and 3”. Both of the 13s are still on the snow. Both guys I sold them to are friends I ride with and in the heavy NW snow we ride in they work AWESOME! If I was running a 2.5” I wouldn’t spend the money to change out to a 3”. The 15s with the 3” run and work great toobut im not sure they are any BETTER.
Rode the 3” 174 872 yesterday. That sled works so well and the engine runs so strong. At 1300 miles it’s making more power now than ever. It was hitting the ETEC “revving up too fast” rev limiter again. Going to try some more weight in the RB big bore clutch kit.:face-icon-small-hap

Was just curious. Before i put a 872 om my sled I was looking at a different 872 someone was selling. They claimed that with the 2.5, you get higher track speed climbing. Evidently they rode with some of the skidoo backcountry experts, Ashley Chaffin and such. I am not out of break in yet but was considering stuffing a 3" under it.

Once again what type of terrain, conditions are you riding, track length?

If it’s steep and deep go 3”, I only ride my 2.5 big bore on spring like conditions or no new snow now.
