Im trying the newer style TCL on my 16. Mine was cracked, see picture.

It’s a pretty easy fix. You do have to pull the jack shaft. Easier if you have a belt drive. The primary can be a pain to get off. The bearing housing, behind the secondary, needs to be changed. I don’t have a press, so used a heat gun on the housing and tap it off. Then heated the new housing and tapped it on. A bench vise is helpful.

The newer TCL is lighter. Hopefully it holds up . A list of parts are pictured. All the bolts are different and come with loc-tight.

Not sure when I’ll get some miles on the sled, it’s my backup sled. But will keep everyone updated if there is an issue.

TCL

I hate worrying about parts destined to go bad; My '17 Mountain Cat is, so far without a crack in the TCL, but the part # is different from the '16 & the '18. Is the '17 MC TCL an improved part over the '16 & only differs from the '18/19 due to the C-TECH 800 motor/clutching? The engine mounts are the same part# from '17 to '19.

One thing most of us over look is the why? Why did it crack? I have found some possible reasons for the cracking. The engine mounts are a different part number for the 17-19 than the 12-16 I could be totally wrong but it seems the 16 and earlier are the ones cracking. Does anyone know of 17-19 with cracks? I have not heard of any but that does not mean it isn't happening.

I don’t know. I’ve never looked at the TCL on a 17. Is it solid like the 19 or thinker with “hollowed” out sections in the middle?

Guess I’m going to test this out, see if it’s because of the motor mounts or TCL design change. I was not aware they changed the mounts. The two TCLs are are quite a bit different. 19 is thinner and a solid piece the 16 thicker with machined out center section.

Also did this on my 2014 engine with 2017 chassis and installed a BDX Ti jackshaft while I was at it. At the time it was released on the 2017 Mtn Cat I believe Cat claimed it was 0.75lb lighter. Than the previous design. BDX claimed 2lb lighter on their shaft. I weighed the complete 2014 plate with my 2015 jackshaft as an assembly with all the hardware, and did the same with the new TCL and Ti shaft. Weight difference between the two was 2.25lb. So either one of them was lying or they both fudged their numbers and rounded up!

Anyway, my old TCL wasn't cracked in 2000 miles with my big bore. Just going through a weight reduction plan on the old sled. New motor mount puck has a green dot on it, and the old one has what looks like the remnants of a yellow dot. If I recall from the M series days the green was 10 duro stiffer? Two day trips and 60 miles on it now.

Is this a good idea??

Thanks for the details on replacing your TCL with the latest one available. I have a 2016 M8 with a cracked TCL and according to several Cat dealers I contacted, and my on-line research, everyone says that I have to use part number 0708-622 which is like the one you have with the crack in it. I would like to replace mine with a stronger TCL and I am thinking that your approach using 0708-680 is the preferred way...however, are you sure the two parts are exactly the same fit? I would hate to put on the new part and unknowingly create a miss-alignment which results in future belt problems. Has anyone done much riding on a 2016 or earlier M series that has had this newer TCL installed? I like the idea...I'm just a little gun shy! Thanks ET

The 2017 Mountain Cat has the same engine, clutches, belt, and alignment as your 2016 and originally called for a 0708-675 TCL (looks like the 0708-680 and has been superseded to that number that is used on the current model sleds). To me that confirms the motor mount/engine/jack shaft locations are maintained throughout the years. As long as you get the new style bearing carrier/bolts for the jack shaft to mate to the newer TCL there shouldn't be issues. I suspect most sources are steering you to the old part because it is the most direct fit without messing with the jack shaft bearing. You will need to get an alignment bar and verify the secondary offset is correct after the swap is done. Mine changed slightly, but I also changed the jack shaft too.

I called 3 other BC dealers yesterday and the one in Golden confirmed that the new style TCL will fit but he didn't say anything about needing a different bearing hub. On the 2016 the bearing hub on the jack shaft is p/n: 2602-454. On the 2017 & 18 Ms the bearing hub is p/n: 2602-422. Are you saying that if I put on the newer style TCL then I also need to use the bearing hub from the 2017/18 Ms? If so that doesn't sound so bad. I see that the jack shaft bearing is the same p/n: 2602-247 on the 16/17/& 18 Ms so I think the newer bearing hub should fit. I don't have an alignment tool but I could take the sled to the dealer to have the clutches aligned. Thanks for taking the time to help me work through these details. Ed

Here's a 19 Alpha bearing and an older cat bearing and holder. I think it may be from a 13 or 14 or 15 Cat.
One has 4 bolts and one has 6 bolts holding it on.

OK. I see it now. This also explains why you need to pull the Jack shaft to install the new TCL! Thanks for your help. I know what to do now.

With the TCL change I notice that the Jack Shaft is a different P/N between the 16 &17..... any advise here?
2016 TCL 0708-622 & Jackshaft 2602-969
2017 TCL 0708-675 & Jackshaft 3602-011
2018,19,20 TCL 0708-680 & Jackshaft 2602-995

Just wondering what differences in the Jackshaft.
