Wayde Turbotater Johnson has always been known as a GREAT engine guy. He has been porting and tuning two-strokes since the 1970s.
He KNOWS pipe mods and clutching.
He is the innovator of the reed valve system in the airbox of carbed two-stroke turbo sleds.

Over a decade ago, I posted on here about where to take my sled for some work on my PSI motor. I asked about PSI, SLP, Doug Ruth...etc etc. Many people suggested those...but the overwhelming majority said to take it to Wayde Johnson in Hazelton, ID. So I did. SMART MOVE.
He took the engine that Bruce Kalhammer (from PSI Performance) called a "full race ported" 1155cc twin that was supposed to run on 50% race gas engine and massaged it over. He reshaped the ports and cleaned it up a bunch so the fuel mixture went to the center of the piston instead of elsewhere.
Wayde said to dump the PSI pipes (which is where Bruce got his start in the 1970s and did quite well with them). Wayde made a pipe suggestion and helped find a set. Did a little clutch work and away we went. That engine came alive and ran like a scalded dog...NOT ON 50/50 RACE GAS, but with just ONE gallon of race gas to take the edge off.

Wayde did a fantastic job for me. I quickly learned to trust that other people's recommendations were RIGHT about him.

In 2009, I had Wayde build the clunker 2003 800 ves engine than I bought on the internet. He turned that think into a monster and it ran VERY well for 4 seasons for me until I sold it. And it's still running today as if it were brand new.

SO, Wayde is more honest than the day is long. He is a straight shooter and doesn't buy into hysteria or hype. He does what works and he does it because he's working from hands-on experience. He doesn't push things out to the limit, but makes them run REALLY well in spite of that.

Wayde has done porting and engine work for a lot of other bigger named companies. They sent their stuff to him and had him do it to their specs. He learned a lot about how he would do it different and built a library of his own specs. He did a lot of King Cat and M1000 port jobs that jpeople would swear there was more two it.
He'd gotten into partnering the 850/858 big bores from M2W a couple years ago, but now he's partnered with Stroker Customs in Colorado to make a 962 stroker big bore. Wayde is also making his own 910 big bore for the Pro and Axys engines.

Given Wayde's fantastic reputation and my own personal experience with him, I felt like I could go with his 910 big bore. I was one of his first 910 builds.

Back in December, I loaded up the sled and my son on a Friday night and headed for southern Idaho for "a fresh top-end" :).

I had the upper case half ported a couple weeks before that, so it was ready to "bolt on" when we got there.

Here is the build and ride report.....

T8rz Porting and Performance is not some big shop. It's a very small one-man outfit that pays CLOSE attention to detail.
Wayde builds these out of his own garage in Hazelton Idaho.

He doesn't do this work for a business because he has to, he does this for fun because he WANTS to. That's why he's GREAT at it.

This is his porting bench in the garage. He backs the wife's car out so he can work.

The porting bench.

I wasn't going to take any chances, so the first thing I did was take pictures off all the wire harness plug-ins before we pulled everything apart for the assembly of the top-end kit.

We left the engine in the chassis and left the carbon fiber over-structure in place.

It's a gamble, but it wasn't too bad until the end when we were putting the exhaust springs on. THAT story will come later. LOL

As I said in the first post, the upper case half was already ported ahead of time. You gotta make room for the piston skirts..

Studded cylinders and heads are the ONLY way to go.

Used two nuts and driver to turn them into the cylinders.

Yes, we used plenty of assembly lube.

Sleeved and ported cylinders

Some welding put in here to reinforce the cylinders. This helps to make room for wider boost ports.

Heads were a little tight so my son gets a lesson in turning them down a bit in the lathe.

The following photos detail the exhaust valve install. I went with the lighter Polaris purple springs.

We also cut out a bit of the exhaust pipe on both ends. A little at the header and a little at the exit by the exhaust can. Came out to about 5/8" removed in all.

We also had to weld on the exhaust bung.
