Recoil Issues?

I've seen a few posts regarding recoil issues on the G4 sleds.

I have a new '18, but it came with E-start, so I don't even have a recoil.

You guys that are having troubles, are you all stock, or doo you have a can on it?

Does anyone have bad unit that they have replaced that I could git my hands on?
Or have these all been replaced under warranty so far?

2019 - second test drive and the recoil is useless after ~15 minutes. Let it cool down, works great. Stock everything. Will be calling dealer in the AM.

Yeah, the G4 has the can sitting almost right on top of the recoil.
This is gunna be a bigger problem than ever I think.

It will go away in 60-100miles, it is a bolt that is too snug that when it gets warm it is not grabbing, which is why when it cools down it sticks again, pain but use your shot and it will go away in that timeline, if it does not , just take it in...has nothing to do with a can or not. this is for 2019

Norona is clueless, again. It has nothing to do with a bolt. Anyone that has ever taken one of these things apart would know that.
The "old" pawl has a plastic knob that goes into the pulley. The problem has to do with that. The new updated part has two O-rings on that knob. (Knob isn't the correct term, but cannot think of the right one.)
He IS correct on one thing, on some sleds, is that if you just deal with it, the problem may go away. My 175 out of the crate didn't work. I jiggled it to make it work to ride, it stranded me after ten miles, was good after the updated part was installed.
My FR 154 was fine for 19 miles, then it hung. I tipped the sled on it's side, packed snow on the recoil, and it worked again. Good for 200 miles as of today. So again, he is right about the problem getting better after miles.
That is good, right? $15K and a recoil that you have to screw with to make it work? Rocket science.

Kind of a dick way to say you don't agree with someone. I just had problems with my 18 too and the dealer won't do anything because it works now so I'm not real thrilled either. I see Norona trying to share info then someone makes a crappy remark and he stops responding to the thread. Doesn't seem real helpful.

It's still no reason to be rude about it. I appreciate the replies from everyone.

I put the call in to my dealer, no active campaigns on my serial #. I gave them the # I was able to find online. The service guy was going to see if anyone there knew anything and get back to me. I'm leaving for a trip on Friday and doubt they will have the parts to fix it before then.

Does anyone have a copy of the bulletin 2019-0005 or 2019-5? Pics of the parts would be interesting to see as well.

Problem
When the engine reaches its operating temperature, the rewind starter mechanism might not engage.

Solution
Replace rewind starter pawl.

If you had to start it with a rope off the clutch..
I think you might be able to put the newly designed clutch cover on with it running?
Otherwise you could leave the clutch cover off to get back to trailer.

Would suck to be stranded in Backcountry.
Injured putting clutch cover back on.
Injured blowing a belt with no clutch cover.

I don’t think this is a small annoying issue.. more of a safety issue.

And this is not the first time Doo has had this issue.. Crazy Right??

I have what I consider to be a great dealer and they told me also that the problem would resolve itself in the first hundred miles and if not they would figure out what was needed. Kind of a hassle so far as it's happened to me 3 times in 2 rides.

2017 Recoil Issue

I have a 2017 850 165 with a recoil issue. Didn't start happening until this season. Sled has plenty of miles so this is annoying now. Comes and goes throughout the day being ridden. Worst I guess is clutch start it.

I am clueless, but the engineers I talk with do know a thing or two, sorry i did not build it and you may not like the answer but it is still the answer. Happy Riding!

Unrelated to the 2019 issue, that will go away. But get it in under warranty if it is or fixed and hope your dealer helps you out. cheers dave

You can start it off the clutch and put the 2019, 2018 and 2017 cvt cover back on, you just have to be carefull around any moving part. 2019 is an annoying issue that will go away and not on every sled as I have broken three in and have not encountered the issue. I have shot but test it every time as per requests, i still have fresh sleds so it may happen with them. and different issues over different years....still small percentages but annoying non the less.

Most of us appreciate you being here Dave. Thanks for the insight. My dealer is still trying to figure out where the parts are and why the campaign isn't showing for my sled, so I'm going to run it and see what happens.

I'm leaving in the morning for a week of riding. Snow totals are looking good out your way, maybe I'll bump into you! :eyebrows:

I have two '18 165 summits pull start only bought end of last season and now with very low hours - both recoils have already failed. One when in deep powder 15 miles from the truck and 13 degrees. I really did not enjoy having to play the whole rope the clutch game in those conditions and then fitting the cover onto the spinning pulleys. They are both now at the dealer and I am waiting to find out if there "is warranty coverage" for this on basically new sleds. While they are there I also asked about the clutch/ mounts updates- we shall see on that as well

yes but today it went warm, extreme avy conditions. do you have shot? I assume you do, then you just start it with that in the am and use shot all day, because we are trying to see how long etc i pull my sled over every time...it has worked as designed. Like I said if your pull start does not work when warm it will when it cools. And after 60-100 miles or 100-150km it should work as promised is what we are seeing. Happy Riding! Suppose to cool tonight and 50 cms more tonight so that should be sick!

sucks, the issue on 19 is different, those 18's should be covered under warranty for sure. Mounts won't unless you have blown belts and have made a claim, no need to replace if you have not blown belts, bulletins are ongoing so if you ever do and make a claim then you will get motor mounts. or you can pay for them, not expensive. cheers dave
