Drove to sand lake last night from Arlington in 2x4 with a single place sled trailer in tow. Did about 6 miles on the roads but it was pretty thin, skis were skipping off the bottom from time to time. Something to do but more snow is needed before I road ride again. Snotel read 11" but that's a bit optimistic.

From years past is Usually takes at least 18" on sand lake snotel before it's really road ride able. The sand lake snotel is hidden in the trees with a north facing aspect. So usually less than what that snotel reads is on the roads.

Is sand lake in the snowies? I recently moved from Alaska and don't know the area much yet. I was able to get some spring rides in at centennial which was great and Albany which sucked! In my opinion anyways... What time of year are you usually able to get some miles in up in the snowies?

I rode on 2ft of super light pow last year on October 5th. First good "road ride" with somewhat of a base was on Oct 19th. I've gotten an October road ride in the snowies every year since 2008 when I rode about 20" or so on 11/6/08. This year is starting out horrible.

Don't forget the Winter Travel Managment

Everyone please keep in mind that there is no off road travel until there is a solid 12 inches ANDit's later than November 15th. Those are the regulations the Medicine Bow forest service office have put in place starting last year.

So has anybody been up top to see if it is starting to build up a little?

Last Friday there was 2-3" on the ground @9500' 11 miles up the trail from Albany. Hopefully there is 6-8 on top of that by now. Slow start but the forecast looks promising.

Yes, please remember that there must be 12" of snow to ride off trail. With this next chance of possible snow Saturday, it will be tempting for some to push it. Let's not give the Forest Service reasons to change the start date back to what they originally had stated.

Good reminder, but the smart ones wait till there's at least 3-4 feet of snow!

Road ride worthy only on the north side. Zero base off the main roads. Truck traffic prior to this storm helped the main roads a ton, but still not dropping shoulders just yet.

They kicked us out from up top and closed the gates behind us for the season, so we went down to sand lake road and unloaded. Didn't have to drive very far in to get to decent snow. Snow was a lot better than expected, put on 50 miles of all smiles :becky:
