Maybe not new idea, but for sleds maybe. We've been testing this setup this season so far. Its been pretty flawless. There is some time needed to fit the two components and wire them together but in total the weight savings is good and for not super high dollars. Considering the EarthX battery we were running weighed in at 4lbs this set up came in at 2.88lbs for about the same price as the EarthX battery.
The main reason we looked into this idea, is the Viper seems to be plagued with a voltage issue. If it wasn't good and strong, its would do all kinds of crazy things.

Could you do it without a battery and have the sled charge it?
So you would have to pull start the first time of the day, but then after that the capacitors would have enough charge to run the electric start?

Sure, the Super caps charge very quickly. And do hold the charge for a good while. Just not two weeks. For the day you'd be great once there charged.

Like it. I run an EVO2 4 cell ballistic (weighs less than a pound) on my turbo Skidoo XP and use it with the starting relays to prime my fuel system. Carb turbo roll overs can still be a pain to start. W/ this setup, I could put my starter back on w/ out the weight penalty of a bigger battery. The little Evo does not have enough to do the job by itself.

You mentioned you could get away w/out a battery. Have you tried starting just off the capacitor w/out a battery also wired in line to see if the cranking amps really did hold up or cold start well?

Thanks

You posted in my build thread on TY. Pretty cool setup and very light. I wonder what the lifespan of that capacitor is?

From what Ive read. They have like a 80,000 charge cycle. That sounds a like a lot for me. I figure if I can get 3-4 years out of the module Ill be quite happy.

How do you plan to charge the LiFePo4 battery?
I don't think they're as picky as LiPo batteries but it probably won't take kindly to being hooked up to the sled's alternator output full time.

Ok so we were out again over the weekend. Again totally in love with this set up. Next time out I will try just the Super caps on a warm engine. But this time around sled sat for two weeks(with hobby battery unplugged) the Super caps drained down to about 0.35v plugged the hobby battery back in waited 2min for it to charge the Super cap and it fired right up. No hesitation. It had been -20C over night and about -15C when started.
Next morning tried just the Super Cap. temps were about -12C unplugged the hobby battery and it didn't fire. Then plugged the hobby battery back in waited 2 min and it fired up took a little longer but still started, with out any issues

Brilliant idea.

So brilliant in fact, BRP is using it on their 2018 sleds....they must have seen what you are up to.

Helps me on another project where we were having computer voltage sag issues on a big diesel engine start. This might be just the ticket!!!

Interesting idea for sure.

Guys, be careful when using those light weight automotive jump starters as a power supply though. They are meant to be recharged at low current rates with they're dedicated charger.
If you leave them connected to a vehicle's charging system for an extended period of time, they can catch fire/explode due to the higher current/voltage input.
I've seen this first hand!

Have a look at these guys. They've been doing this for a long time. Pretty much exactly what your looking for. Like I said not new tech but finally getting out to the forefront
