01 and 03 voltage regulator wiring differance

I think the 01 and 03 voltage regulators are wired differently. On the 01 the brown ground wires bolt to the frame. on the 03 harness there is just a plug. Can I cut the brown wires off the plug and then bolt them to the chassis? or should I buy an 03 regulator? This is for the 01 xc 800 that i am installing PERC on.

what I do when I have put perc on 02's is make a wire bolt it to the regulator with a end that will plug into the harness. makes it easier if you ever need to move the harness for some reason
