Putting a new top end in my 09, wondering if I should hone or not. I talked to a local machine shop and they said that the nicasil is so hard that it won't do anything and to just put in the new rings and pistons. What do you guys think?

Any time you install new rings you need to break the glaze on the cylinder walls.

I did a google search and found that a lot of shops recommend breaking the glaze with wd-40 and a scotch brite pad. Most of this came from people dealing with 2 stroke dirt bikes, but a nikasil'd cyl is a nikasil'd cyl right?

When I was riding dirtbikes (Kawi's with nikasil bores) I would just use scotchbrite in the bore whenever I did a top end. Honing nikasil as stated requires special hone and have to be very careful to not catch any edges around ports, if you do you will chip off pieces of it. Just scotchbrite it and put it together.
