I ran my old 16t at 18psi at 0-5k all the time. It was a blast and never had any issues, 100+ octane with a .060 shim and pistons looked great.

These numbers are just off the top of my head from memory but if I remember correctly the max CFM of a 2554 is 398 cfm @ a PR of 2.0. The 16T does 432 CFM at 2.0. You really want to jump up to a 19T which is rated at 500CFM at 2.0. A Garrett 2860 does 530 and a 2871 will do 598. So in answer to your question no the 16T won't be much better than a 2554 which from my experience is too small for the 4 banger.

The 2554 runs out of breath pretty much at 10-12 lbs. If you read the compressor map and do the calculations it'll make more psi but it won't move any more CFM which is what it is all about. Running the 2554 above 12 just makes lots of heat and cracks pretty much everything on the turbine side. The 2554 makes a great low boost turbo though with no headshim.

If you already have a 2554 I wouldn't waste my time with a 16t there isn't going to be any real difference plus the 16T is journal bearing and spools about 25% slower than the GT2554. The flanges for the Mitsus are harder to come by as well so that'll cost you more as well. You can buy the Garrett t25 flange all day long on Ebay for under 10 bucks. Get a 2860.

if your set on cheaper..

get a evo 3 16g mitsu.. they are $500 or 600 BRAND new. they are very comprable to a 2860 and run very well on the 1l motors. it has the bigger exhaust side then the 16t so your not way to tight causing to much heat. and they are rated to 505 cfm abouts.
