Don't really want to buy new every year to get a fair price on setup cost. Looking on the site, it looks like the Gen3 costs $149.95 and then it looks like you have to buy a service plan for $149.95 also. Is this correct? So every year it will cost $149.95 each year to renew?

So do you buy a spot or a plb?

So as I read this thread I get more confused, if you are not worried about follow me maps and just want the assurance that if you are in trouble that someone will be able to find you, what do you buy a plb or a spot? And is there a subscription fee on the plb? Lastly can you use either one on your boat or is spot for land based only? Thanks in advance. Russ

PLB is a simple beacon.
No fees associated with it.

SPOT offers several additional features that may or may not be worth the yearly subscription fee.


I carry both.
