My only concern for you might be the 3" track. They are a little on the aggressive side for trail riding, but hey if you don't like it, you can easily swap a 2.6 in.
A take off, or gently used 3" Powerclaw will bring 700-800$ which would leave you with plenty of money to find a 2.6

^What he said. Gear it up and get rid of the lower aluminum gear in the process, Polaris or SLP skis, and a can. In that order for me. Then ride it.

So I also picked up a 2016 M8000 last winter. Its a ltd 153x3". Great sled but like other 3 inch ltd's, it seems to lack the pull. I'm coming off a 2011 M8 with the same motor, so I have a good idea of Cat's 800.

I have seen some posts about switching to a 8 tooth driver and some posts about changing the gearing/gearing them up. I'm just looking for advice for one vs the other, and if gearing...which gearing has been working the best.

I typically ride 6000-8000 around N. Idaho.

Do the drivers instead of the gearing. I've done both. Stock gears and 8t drivers work way better.

Ok, what would be involved in adding a 8 tooth driver? Just trying to see what this would cost me.

Never done em on a cat but guessing you would just be pulling the driveshaft and pressing on new drivers from Avid. They run $260 (USD) a set and I suppose you would need chaincase oil as well $10-$20.

CLUTCHING

Your lack of pull is primarily clutch setup...

go with

20 / 49 gears or drivers if you want
MDS weights set up for your altitude
160 / 260 BMP spring
BMP teflon anti-bind secondary spring washers
or
just go with a BMP (bikeman) full clutch setup

The MDS weights (proper clutching) should be done before any engine mods... you can really feel it...

Is the 2016 geared lower than the 2017 from the factory?

I believe all are the 19/50 gearing; Even the '17 Mountain Cat, but it has the 8 tooth drivers so the final drive is higher. A 7 tooth driver on a 3" inch pitch track moves the track 18" for each revolution whereas an 8 tooth on a 3" inch pitch moves the track 21" for each revolution of the driver.

I have a 16. My experience. Had a 14 with 20/50 ratio and 8 tooth. Worked very well. Tried matching that ratio on my 16 with just gear change, didn’t work. Just wasn’t the same. Did the drop and roll and changed to 8 tooth drivers, that did it. The 8 tooth drivers do fit without the d&r. In my opinion changing the drivers is the best way to go.
