I just bought this machine and I'm not familiar with the older arctic stuff but it seems like the clutch isn't right. It doesn't engage until 5000 rpms and when it does it's just like you dumped the clutch on your car.It has no creep to it so to speek even if you just ease into the throttle. Its all or nothing and very aggressive. Is this normal or where should I start? Thanks for any help...

It is possible you have notched weights in the clutch. They were commonly used in that era of AC. Also the high engagement was common also. The weights could also be sticking. I had a 97 powder special 580 that ran the best using notched weights and an engagement of 5000rpms.

belt

If the clutch is OK the belt could be to thin (worn out). I just heard this problem from one. He bought an new clutch and went to a clutch spezialist. At the end it was the belt.
The Sled was Polaris Trippel 800 ...

Should have yellow white spring. Yes 5000 is about when is should engage. It was set for trail and lake racing not mountain riding. I would fore sure pull the weights and replace the fiber bushing where the weight pins go through.

I remember fighting with the clutching on one of those. I was getting tired of getting stuck anytime you tried to take off anywhere except a hardpacked trail.
I think I ended up with a red spring, part #0646-149, and 47 or 48 gram weights without the notch. That brought the engagement down to a little under 4000 rpm which the engine would handle as long as the jetting was right.

Thanks for all the info guys.I'll have to tear into it and see whats there. We ride mostly at 7000-9500ft and I would feel better with her on it if it would engage at 4k or so and maybe not so hard.It slams so hard i keep thinking the belt(or worse) is going to break.
