What's the best way to get to the 4 bolts towards the bottom of the steering post?
Any other tips or advice would be appreciated.

Pull the air box and the carbs. I feed a 9/16 box end wrench down in there and hold the bolt that attaches the rod to the arm on the bottom of the post. Then a 9/16 socket and every extension you can find for your ratchet to unscrew the nut on that bolt. Remove the handle bars and the bolts in the top support. Now only thing left should be those 4 nylocks. Loosen them until the bolts start to spin. Pry out on the post so they will not spin. Here comes the trick! Before you take them completely loose, I fish a piece of thin safety wire around the threads of each bolt between the bulkhead and the post bracket and twist them tight. Now you can keep them from falling out of the bulk head. If they do they are a night mare to get back in there. Just finish removing the old post and reverse.

Fishing line may work too.
