Looking for some advice on a 2001 ZR800 that needs an engine rebuild. A guy in our riding party purchased a 2001 ZR800 with the engine in a basket. From looking it over the crankshaft is toast. Also from asking around he found out the pistons in the 2001 were known for dropping the skirts so he picked up a set of the 2002 and up pistons. I am wondering if there is any other areas we need to be concerned with in rebuilding the engine? Also he is looking for a good crank for the 2001 ZR800 engine as well so please contact me if you might have one for sale.

THANKS!

If the PTO end of the crank is toast, he might want to look into getting a 2002+ crank end, and a new primary clutch. The 2001 has a 30mm PTO crank end, and they changed that to a 33mm in 2002. There weren't a lot of problems with them breaking, but there were a few. If the clutch is also shot, it should be just as cheap to go with the newer crank.

He is actually thinking about upgrading the cranks to the 33mm style as long as he has to purchase a crank. The only thing holding him back is the primary clutch was recently replaced by the previous owner and only has 250 miles on it at the most.
