Buying a '16 - Best Strategy?

I'm pretty set on getting a new sled for next season. Currently on an M7 (my first sled, have had it since '10). All of the new stuff looks sweet but my priority is reliability, and Cat still seems to be making the most bomber sled. Seems worth it to get a '16 over the earlier ProClimb models, but what should I expect to pay for a pretty fresh used sled or a holdover? Which route should I go?

- Buy a used '16 with <1000 miles right now (~$7500-8500)
- Buy a holdover from last season
- Something else?

I can afford new-ish, but I don't think I need it. My thought is to buy used this spring, but there aren't a ton for sale. I'm in CO, but could travel for the right deal.

I'll be keeping the M7 primarily to let buddies use so I can get out more. Not sure if that changes the strategy, but I suppose I could get away with something less reliable (like an older Pro) since I'll have a backup....this is probably a stupid idea.

I have a 16 162 3" with some performance changes, a completely stock 17 mountain cat wails on me in really deep climbing days. Up to you I guess.

But I'm really liking my 16. Came off a 200hp m1000, I miss torque, but after a day of riding I'm nowhere near as tired.

Well if you can do a '16 holdover the Axys is a great sled, more fun than a stock 16 M8000 IMO. With bomber reliability being the #1 concern, find yourself a '16LE or even a '17 Mtn Cat for $10k or less, they are out there. My buddy picked up a nice black 16 LE 162 and loves it. He came off of a modded '08 M1000.

The 16 is a solid machine, first of the proclimbs to come capable out of the box. The drop and roll chaincase and narrow boards and body of the '17 get it close to the impressive '18s with the old proven motor.

Get the best you can afford as they are rapidly advancing...

Check KSL, there are a few 17 mountain cat 162's on there with around 300 to 500 miles for 8,700 to 8,900. Best deal I have seen..

Too many mods for my taste but thanks for the offer!

Wait bigger rebates will be coming

Coming when? I assumed prices would go up again in the fall?

Thanks for the offer. I'd be interested in the stock M8 if it didn't have the E-start.

picked up 5 2016 from them last year and a bit dirty but other than that like new.

That's definitely the cheapest MC I've been able to find (thanks to this thread). Thanks for the info on the condition of their fleet.

I got a tip from another member on here about some pretty good holdover deals. I put the feelers out, will see what comes back.

North- Yes, it's a stock 2016 M8000 Limited 153x3", non ES. 302 miles, no scuffs or scratches, under hood mechanically has been gone through and checked over, no issues at all.

Only single thing I found when cleaning it this spring was one lug is half missing. See the last photo. All the rest are good, no tears or others missing.

It's in MN now, but I should be able to get it to CO for a little more $$ as I have friends who go there and back from MN.

Buy a holdover or wait and buy an 18. Dealers seem to be willing to deal more with excess inventory.

great thread. will be exploring deals this fall as well. coming back to sledding after a 4 year break, used to riding Polaris iq raw chassis, but reliability is absolutely biggest factor. the M8 and 8000 are the most reliabable sled?

Cat dealer in Big Bend, WI has 16's with 1-40 miles (like new) $8000 for 162 and $7500 for 153. 11k for a 17 m8000 ES 153 brand new. 13,400 for 18 m8000 153.
I purchased a 16 SP 153 last year for $8000...I am a skidoo guy, but this was too much sled to pass up. Showed up and drove off, decent guys to deal with especially if you know what you want.
Warranty is not included in all deals...that may have been the only "catch" but it is a proven set up. Took me a few miles to get adjusted to the balance points and longer feeling coming from the XP Summit x.
There is always a deal to be had, be patient and enjoy the process.
