Mounting pelican case on tunnel

I have also mounted a pelican case for a trip out west on top of Mountain Addiction rails with longer bolts.
So thank you for this topic. I needed a new tunnel bag and don't really like any of the ones out there for sale right now and they are freaking expensive. I started looking for a pelican case and they were around $90-$120 for the size range I was looking at. Well I was at Home Depot the other day and saw this Rigid tool box on the shelf for $30. It actually is pretty stout so I said what the hey it's only $30. Spent $13 on an aluminum tube and few few more bucks on some bolts and I got to say I'm liking my new tunnel bag. Less than $50 and I have a waterproof case that should hold up quite well. So thanks again for the idea.

Nice setup, that box looks sturdy, and like you say for $30 whats there to lose. Beats the $180-$300 you would spend on a bag thats gonna get soaked and or come off.So thank you for this topic. While on the topic of budget "mods", as you can see when comparing our pics I took some material off my tunnel at the rear of the boards. I cant see any reason that its there in the first place and not having it there should help significantly with snow build up in that area. I just used a hacksaw to cut it and cleaned it up with a grinder.

Did you use old Hifax to mount onto the sled ??
That would have been a good idea but I don't have any of that laying around. I just just used a 1" aluminum tube from Home Depot and wrapped it with black gorilla tape.

Ya my last 2 bags I bought for over $180 and both of them are broken. Lasted only part of a single season. Everything it them was always wet, Zippers get frozen and break, buckles break, straps pull out, and cloth gets worn out fast. Hopefully this one will last at least one season.
That's a good idea about cutting that piece of metal out. I may have to try that too. Yours looks really good. I had to go look at mine again because yours looks like it came that way. Great job on that.

Hahaha I know. It seems like there are only 3 bags out there anymore and they cost an arm and a leg. It seems like the gear and accessories for this sport have quadrupled in price the last few years too. As much as I would like to keep supporting everyone inside the industry it seems like they are starting to take advantage of us. I'm all for anyone trying to make a buck or 2 off of the products that are developed for sled specific crowd but not everyone can afford these brands anymore.

I did the Ridgid Box too, although I altered the mounting a little bit and painted the orange bits satin black, cut the handle off, etc...
I used 3/4 aluminum tubing because it fit directly in the recessed groves underneath the box. This allows a lower profile so you don't end up kicking the box, yet still allows airflow underneath so it doesn't hamper cooling at all. Its hella stout and very waterproof...looks like it was made for the sled, excellent idea to the original poster....thank you!

Looking at doing the same mount as the guys that used the aluminum tubing. Did any of you use any type of sealant to keep the water out? I'm looking at using a case for my big camera so don't want water getting in. But I also want the option of taking the case off my tunnel if I decide not to take the camera so don't know how I should go about it.
Sorry I haven't been on here for a while. But I figured I would update how my tool box held up. It has held up great. Still like new. I got 1,500 miles in and never once had a problem. Kept all my stuff completely dry. So far it's the best "tunnel bag" I have ever owned. Here are a few pictures of my finished box. Last 2 pictures I just took this morning. As you can see it has held up very well.

I didn't use any sealant but I did use the screws that have a gasket-ed washer on them that I used inside the box. Mine can be taken off pretty easy by just taking the bolt out of the aluminum rail. I put them on such that I can get to the bolts without having to take the box off. So just 4 bolts and it comes off very easy.

Those are called Ski Brakes. During late spring the riding the conditions are such that going down a steep tree covered hill on really hard snow can cause problems with trees and sleds. You throw one on a ski before you head down the hill and you can go much slower and control your decent down the mountain in icy conditions. Use 2 for really steep hills. It has gotten me out of a sticky situation more than once. Typically I won't need them until late March - June.
I learned this back in the year 2000 when I went to the Jackson hill climb and have carried them ever since.
Just take an old belt and cut it and bolt it back together so that it just fits over your ski.
