Is there a benefit to this?

There is a small weight savings. It gives you better clearance between the cooler and the cylinder head. It also eliminates the plug cap rub on the steering post that happens on occasion.

Meh, no performance gains makes it sound not worth it.

Most of what it took to build this sled that light would not be worth it to most people.

I'm betting the only 2012 left in that sled is the engine, lower and front bulkhead, front half of the tunnel (if he did a TKI drop and roll, other wise complete tunnel swap), lower steering post, throttle bodies, maybe the handlebars, and the wiring harness/ECU.

Just wanted to say I did a walk-around of this sled yesterday. Soooo many hours put in to build. Even the larger nuts have holes bored into their faces and all the bolts are trimmed flush. Not sure how much fuel was in it, but It's silly how easy it is to throw around.
