Clutch won't come off, I am screwed!

Again, use YELLOW teflon tape, it is thicker and seals better. If you hear the water coming out, you are not sealed well enough. Also, thread it in fast so the pressure builds faster than it bleeds off. If you do it correctly, the puller will not even bottom and the clutch will come off like a ton of bricks!!

Bought yellow tape, I think there is a technique to taping. When I pull the bolt out it is clean no tape. I tried one layer and then part way down upped to two layers ( taper?) may need a few tries to get the right combination.

I put in some solvent ( bolt loosener) in the hole and tightened the bolt down.

I was able to put water in earlier but the pressure did not pop it loose.

It is on there tight. Just going to take several steps. I have hit the bolt with a smooth framing hammer but no results. I am also carefull as I do not want to damage my crank, bearing or seals. I tried heating the shaft between the sheaves, no results.

Just going to let it soak over night and tommorrow I will go back to water.

We are measured by our challenges and this one is a tough.
anyway I sincerely appreciate everyones help and this job is going to be 10 times easier thanks to your recommendations.

I would love to use the sled on Saturday but I have to succeed first.

I am not opposed to cutting it at some point but this will be an option after a number of solid water fill attempts.

Thanks again,

Ian

Dumb question, but are you putting the teflon tape on correctly?? It will strip it off, just need to wrap it tight and don't over do it, one wrap up the threads is good. I had one on so tight when it came off, I was glad there was a belly pan there, cause it hit that belly pan so hard, scared the piss out of me.

The only time I have not seen this method work is if the clutch has spun on the crank pretty bad, then you may have to cut it off.

Got it off!!!!!!

Pit of despair to the joy of victory.

I just could not get the tape to work. it would leak water and just push the tape back when I tightened it.

I put the broken peice of the puller back in the hole and cranked it down again.

Hopefully the cutting might get it to bust loose if I could cut the rite peice.

I cut the sheave off. I cut along the shaft so deep that I saw a space below it.

I figured I had ruined the crank. I used an air chisel and cut the inside sheave off and then dremeled the last bit of the sheave loose. The air chisel finally got through and it was free.

The crank is fine, I am ever so happy and will give the new primary a test ride in the new deep powder tommorrow.

what where you thinking there, good luck with your crank bearings. You should have cut it all the way and not used a air hammer.

The whole job ( needing to cut the thing off) was ridiculous!

Its already such an over the top job, whatever happens happens.

I would rather replace the bearings on my crank than cut another one of these off.

I hated this job, it was messy, loud, emotional and should be totally unnecessary.

The air hammer did bust the sheaves off pretty easily so I hope I didn't hurt the bearings. Thats life! If my bearings do go bad I will add to this thread.

I want this thread to help others but really I am not sure how this helps except as a how to or how not to example of cutting up a primary.

As I started out saying in the beginning "I am screwed".

I couldn't get the hydro unlock to work and this was my only option.

Anyway I will find out today, should be in some deep snow in about 2 hrs.

first time on this sled with a fully functioning primary clutch.:face-icon-small-hap

I tried both types of tape and wrapped them clockwise and counter clockwise. I tried one layer and two layers. I tried it about 12 different times trying to vary my approach to get a different outcome. Same result crank in, water dribbled out.

I think all the force thinned the threads, In the end when I put the bent tip back in and cranked it down, I couldn't retract the puller. It squeeked and was unbelievably difficult to turn back out. In fact the puller ( not that this ever pulled anything) is in the garbage as it is stuck inside the threaded shaft.

It could be something to do with the inside threads, perhaps a bur or bent?

I was really bummed when I started cutting. I even tried pipe thread paste, and a layer of teflon tape higher up the shaft.
