2,300 miles completely stock 09 m8. Is this normal? Since aug it has been started once a month and idled for 10min. So about 40min of idling all together. Idk if that has anything to do with it or not.

to me it looks just as i would have expected for the miles.
looks like u have a bit of blow by. you could do a compression
test, but either way i would still throw a top end on it

Just as Mike said, looks as I would expect a 2300 mile sled to. You may have had some slight detonation on the top front of the piston. Hard to see, easy to feel. I would definitely hone the cylinders and put a fresh top end in her.

looks normal

at 900 miles it will look the same. previous Suzuki engines to the 03-012 laydown engine this was an alarming look. But some Suzuki engineers back then changed some ting and now all that tobacco brown below your rings is " normal ". Blow by ? for sure, that's how the brown got there, but check for compression, not a problem. In 03 we changed pistons and rings on the first 5 or 6 firecats we looked at after 150 miles becasue we had this brown blowby, convinced the engines had gone to hell. Then cat was out of parts, we found out what we didn't know. Thats how these motor work ?

That is strange. Gonna have to digest that for a while as right now.... it doesn't compute....

The laydown motors always have blowby.

I have had 200 miles or less on motors and pulled the pipe and saw the brown below the rings and thought there was a problem, but they will all have the browning below the rings after just a few miles. I have not seen this more or less as the years have gone by, but as Catsledman said, if you looked at a standup 900 for instance and it had this type of blowby you would have cause for alarm.

I think it is directly related to the intake and exhaust being on the same side.

U can still see the hone marks. And piston wash looks great. No sign of detonation on top. Sled runs great. I just thought that after 2,300 miles I should pull the pipe and plugs and take a look. Still on original sparkplugs.
