I wonder why Cat does this? Just to make sure the engine has a really oily cylinder wall at start up? With modern machining the engine parts aren’t going to change dimensionally at all. The pistons are coated, they won’t lose any measurable thickness of that coating in the first season I’d bet. The cylinder is nikasil and harder than the back of gods head. That isn’t going to open up at all either. Bearings are prelubed etc. Maybe the rod bearings will wear a bit to there prescribed tolerance but I don’t think any other parts are going to “seat”,” get happy together” or really break in at all.
I have always broken engines in hard via the Motoman described method. The only thing I’m trying to do is get the rings to seat in while the cross hatch in the nikasil is present. Which isn’t long. I don’t even start my sleds unless I have to until I get a real break in ride.
Be hard to do on my Alpha limited to 7000rpm to break it in like I want to.

I never noticed any RPM limit either, just the initial high oil consumption.

some dealers are doing the 18 minute rev limit (6400) cycle time ( M.Y. 2018), before owners pick them up.

the 2019 M.Y. did not have a rev limiter in place, for break in. Ski

They removed the throttle position threshold for 2019 so if the sled has .3 or more on the hour meter it will be past the 18 minute stage 1 break in even if it was just idle time.
Thanks
