Default 1999 600 gearing for 144 track

I tried searching but got nothing, too many numbers I guess.

I've got a sled that had the 136" track switched for a 144 w/ 2" lugs. Riding is at 6-9k mostly. What's the setup? Does it even matter? Also what's peak rpm on these motors so I can check the current setup?

never had one but I believe its the same chaincase as the first gen 6 and 700s. same target rpm too, 8100.
theres a gear chart in here that should work on yours, make sure you scroll down to the right chaincase - 7.05 center distance (97-98 domestic twins), its a few pages down, right after the older chaincase chart

not sure whats in yours now but id probably shoot for around 2.2 gear ratio, or 18/40 with a 68 pin chain on the chart.
we tried that on a 700 down here at 3000' and found it a hair too low with a SLP pipe. SLP single pipe on those motors pulls stock gearing fine in the mountains.

i also have some super low gears in a parts sled here that would work for ya 18/41. pm me if your interested.
about the same ratio as the infamous 19/43 ratio everybody with sh!t clutch setups and dayco belts swore by in the day..

I don't know if I would change anything until you try the stock which is 19:40 gearing. If you find that is too high then go to 18:40.

Thanks man! Let me get out and ride the thing a bit in some deep snow and see what's up. It's not my sled, a buddy just bought it as his first. He just listened to some nutjob for hours talk about how a 144 is too big for that motor and is all paranoid about it now. Knowing the target rpms helps a lot. We'll be out on it in the next three days. If it seems too loaded, I'll definitely take you up on that.

Not too much track for that sled. 151 and 156 were common track lengths people stretched the 700 to in the day. I ran a 144 on my 99 600 RMK which I later put a 700 top end onto and it worked fantastic, would climb most anything I pointed it at... 2008 600's have 155 x 2.4 tracks and work fine...

Yeah I've got two 2011 rmk 600s with 155s I use in my job that work like a champ. As soon as he told me that, I said never ever listen to a word out of that guy's mouth again.

The last thing I want to do is be teaching a buddy how to ride in real snow on a 136. My back just couldn't take it.

I ran 18/41 in my 00' 700 144 for years without issue and it worked Very well.
