Default Time for a camera

Spent the weekend with a guy that had a Canon T6i and now i gotta have one.

let me start off by saying i dont know jack about cameras. i dont even like go pros or anything like that.

Main purpose is quality pictures and decent videos. Its going to live in my backpack so im not looking for something super fancy.

Right now im looking at the Nikon D3100 or T3i both sound like they are perfect for what im looking to do. And both can be had for under 400 bucks used with a 75-200 lens.

Any suggestions or tips? goal is to be under 500 for sure (the less the better)

We have a Canon SX40HS. Zoom lens 35x15. Takes fantastic pictures. But is a bit bulky. Also have a Sony Cyber shot. 2-1/4" x 3-1/2" x 1" in size. Takes good pics and very convenient. And a GoPro and iPhone 6+. The most important feature for me is a camera with a view finder. If it's sunny I can't see what I am looking at with a screen only camera. Especially with all that white snow. I'm no camera guy either.

I have a Nikon D3200 I carry in a Pelican 1200 case in my backpack. D3200 has twice the megapixels as a D3100, so I'd highly recommend stepping up to a D3200 from a D3100 at a minimum. I paid $399.99 for my camera, which included a 18-55mm and 55-200 lense on black friday special. The Majority of your shooting is going to be somewhere between 20-120mm for snowmobiling imo. Carrying 1 lense around would be ideal if you went that route. This is my first DSLR and I don't know much about them but I do feel like the canon is slightly more user friendly but is lacking in FPS and MP versus the comparable Nikon's, which is the only reason I own a Nikon.

I actually ended up getting the exact bundle you got. A d3200 with both lenses. Now it's time to play with it

I have been using the Sony RX10m2 this year, I think one of the best bang for your buck is the RX100m4 if compact is the goal. Panasonic also has a great camera in the FZ1000. These are all fixed lens cameras but have excellent zoom.

These are all the cameras I looked at for their ability to film in 4K as well. Right now the FZ can be purchased for under $600 which is outstanding. But in my case the video was more important than the image, just wanted something that could supply both well.
