MICHIGAN - FS Accepting Comments on Proposed Changes to Huron-Manistee Forest Plan Affecting Snowmobiling and Hunting
Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,
We wanted to let our Action Alert Subscribers know that the Huron-Manistee National Forest has released the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS) regarding the revised Forest Plan for public review and comment.
Many of you will remember that this supplemental planning effort was mandated after a lawsuit was filed seeking to ban hunting and snowmobiling in certain areas of the forest.
As a result of a ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the Forest Service has prepared the DSEIS to evaluate the impacts of a proposed ban on firearm hunting and snowmobile use, subject to existing rights, in Semiprimitive Non-motorized Management Areas and a ban on firearm hunting, subject to existing rights, in the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area.
The release of the DSEIS begins a 90-day comment period. The DSEIS is available online at www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5330733.pdf. The DSEIS is also available in print or on CD by calling (231) 775-5023. Comments must be received by December 21, 2011
The Huron-Manistee is holding a series of public meetings as well. We've included a list of locations, times and dates for those meetings below.
Written comments may be submitted to the Forest Planner, Huron-Manistee National Forests, 1755 S. Mitchell Street, Cadillac, MI 49601 or faxed to (231) 775-5551. Comments may be submitted electronically to: comments-eastern-huron-manistee@fs.fed.us with the subject: "Forest Plan SEIS."
For more information, contact Kenneth Arbogast, Public Affairs Officer for the Huron-Manistee National Forests at (231) 775-5023, Ext. 8726 or visit the forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/hmnf.
BRC will forward information and comment suggestions as they become available via our action alert email system.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact BRC.
Thanks in advance for your support,
Ric Foster
