^^ Not sure your on your question...... but you need to pull your chaincase cover to get at your gears/chain.

Well, my 18/46 combo has too much dog leg for a 76 pitch chain, and the 74 pitch is guitar string tight, so it's going to have 19/46 w/ 76P chain.
Buddy is has geared down his 2017 Axys 800 x 163/3", and going to run 18/45 gears with the stock chain.
We will see who's works better this weekend in Revy.

The 19/46 with 76 chain sounds like it'll be good. There are some combinations that aren't recommended by Polaris that will be ok, but if you're not able to get 1/4" deflection, and especially if the chain and sprockets won't slide right on, I wouldn't try it. 18/45 with the 74 chain might be the ideal choice of gear down and minimum dog leg; I've heard the 17t sprockets can have some issues, but can't remember where. Nice thing about the chaincase is unless you're doing something obviously stupid (so tight you have to force it on, or taking up all the adjuster and still loose), it's not going to blow up so quick you won't see it coming a long way off.

Well, my buddies 18/45 seem to have ran better then my 19/46.
Revy snow was fairly crusty with really good traction this past weekend, but I had some issues with my belt slipping halfway up my primary on day 1. Moved some magnets around on my weights and had it somewhat sorted out.
RPM's were fairly consistent at 8400 -8500 with Jaws pipe.
Primary was not shifting out as well as I would have liked, was down 1" to 1.25" on my markings.
Was running the stock Str 40 helix with a Venom 140/220 spring, which I believe was soft for the traction available, and seemed it was up shifting to fast in the secondary.
Messed with some primary weighting and had tried my Indydan Mtn #1 helix on stock black spring 155/222 on day 2 and seemed a bit better.
This is on a brand new primary, new belt, new motor mounts. Think I'll try the 18/45 and re-clutch.
Any advise is appreciated....

Did you mean you are going to try 18/46? You said 18/45. Cheers

KD, I'm was going to try the 18/45.
I had tried last week to install the 18/46, but the 74P chain is way to tight, and the 76P has a lot of dog leg in it. I don't think my tensioner has the room to keep it snug.
Whats the rule of thumb on dog leg being to much ? Anything past parallel to the drive side i'm guessing.
I'm a little reluctant to try a 17 Tooth top gear, as it seems so thin, but may be worth a shot and should be able to run the stock 74P chain.
Been reading my Aaen book again, trying to wrap my thick skull around it .

I’ve never tried anything less than a 19 top gear so I can’t comment.

As for the dog leg, I’ve seen big dog legs work and no dog leg work so I don’t know if it makes a difference. The optimum is to have as little of dog leg as possible. It’s not always possible when experimenting with gears as you discovered. Keep up the experiments. I like to learn from your effort.

Got me some more Venom gears yesterday, going to try a 17/46 (2.70 GR) setup, should be able to fit the 74P chain on this one.
I totally forgot to check belt clearance after 2 days of riding on my new primary.
It was shimmed at .047", so I got it down to .015". Should be ready to rock for her next trip out.
In total I have a 17, 18, 19 top and 44, 45, 46 bottoms 74P & 76P chains.

Nice, sounds like a good plan! I've got 21, 19, and about to get an 18t top gear, and 39, 41, and 43t bottom gears. Doesn't take long for the collection to grow! I liked the jump from 41 to 43t enough that I'm dropping to 18t top, and will probably step up to a bigger bottom gear at some point. Down the road, I'd like to put a synchrodrive belt conversion on it, but will be spending money on a new(er) sled first. I'm still waiting for someone to come back with an "I geared down too far" report, BTW...

Well hopefully get back out to Revy after xmas to test this gearing. The 18/45 worked really good on my buddies identical sled (w/ stock pipe, stock clutching, 10-66's) , but he is weighing in around 270# dry, and really noticed the bottom end was way better and no RPM fade. On the pipe better as well.

I ran 18/44 on my 2017 last week end i thought it worked pretty good but i am missing 350 rpm with stock clutching. I will replace motor mounts and check the thermostat as i was seeing 135 plus on a climb on the same hill our pro was running 105.

Well, heading to Revy this Thursday, and got the 17/46 installed with the stock 74P chain. Gear ratio 2.71 (final drive ratio of 2.94)
Going to add a bit of clutch weight and see how I fair !
So my speedo should read approx 10.5% faster.

Will do.
Here's what the clutches looked like after my last trip running 19/46 gearing. Fairly set up snow and was running 8400-8500 rpm with the stock 40 helix.
I have Indy Dan's MTN #1 helix I'm going to pack with me and will try out again this trip against the str 40. I also have a Polaris Pro helix 56-42 .36 and was interested to see what this will be like. As the Polaris 850's run a str 42 now.

Anyone changed out their 44 bottom gear with anything larger ? Curious to what size a guy can gear down to... 46 - 47. Probably requires a longer chain too i would imagine.
Riding Revy at 4000 - 7000ft with clutching and full Jaws exhaust.

what clutching work did u have done? I have same setup and having issues.
