Found some real good conditions today. Never went North of Trailshead, A good 8 inches new snow since the weekend. Temps never got out of the low 30's today. Found good powder but I lost spark on my Mountain Cat so I had to switch to the old trusty 400 Indy. Best conditions of the year so far.

How far south from trailshead and what trail number were you on might run out there tomorrow if conditions are good.

We unloaded East of the barricade on trail 8, rode 8 to trail 1, turned off 1 North through Blind Park to the Snotel site. Rode North of Snotel site to next meadow. Rode powder along meadow and took pics. East to FS117. North on FS117 to Oatman Springs. Veered NE to road along meadow East of the Mickelson Ranch. Cat broke down, towed back to FS117, towed North to Trail 2, Trail 2 into Hardy Camp, switch to Old Polaris Indy, Lunch at Trailshead. South through meadows to Trail 1 next to Cold Creek, South on 1 to Monkey Hollow. Got Polaris Stuck behind Monkey Hollow. South on 1 to 11, West on FS110 to Trail 11, to Mallow Camp, East to Trail 12, South across head waters of Beaver Creek, South over ridge to Dry Parmelee Canyon, East to Trail 12B to Trail 12, North on FS117 to Trail 1 to Trail 8. East on Trail 8 and past barricade. Veer North, climb ridge to photo site of George Custer's 1874 expedition. Back to truck.

When do they close the system for the season ?

Trails are open through March 31. Grooming will also go as far into March as snow conditions allow. Snowmobiling is still allowed on Forest Service lands and snowed in roads after March 31st. Trails that cross private lands and on the Mickelson Trail are closed starting April 1st.

Snow is holding up ok. Trails were good except they were a little hard and icy this morning but soften up nice by lunch time. Trail into Spearfish canyon is holding up. Just a 1/4 mile stretch that has a strip of gravel down the middle. You can still ride on snow or ice along the edge. Off trail is a little crusty but still somewhat soft in the trees. IMO the snow was much better South of Trailshead, not as crusty and more fresh snow on top. Also much less tracked up. Temps today jusy soften the top and did not melt anything.

accident

The Care Flight helicopter was in the Trailshead lot around noon today. I noticed that Black Hills Trails "tweeted" shortly after that to slow down and be careful on the trails because they were icy. Put those two things together and it sounds like somebody was going too fast on icy trails and had a fairly serious accident. Unfortunate.
