Ski-Doo Backcountry Sport: Adventure Without Boundaries

March 2020 Feature

The purest of 50-50 crossover riders know the ride is not always defined by the lines on a map. The adventure can be just as easily found by desire as it can be by following a GPS.

For a 2021 Ski-Doo Backcountry rider, they might not even have to choose between the two.

Every ride aboard a Ski-Doo Backcountry starts with the REV Gen4 platform—the industry’s most responsive snowmobile platform. Nimble and agile, it responds to the slightest rider movement for effortless maneuverability in deep snow, and precision handling on the trail.

Under the seat sits the purpose-built cMotion suspension that has come to be the benchmark of 50-50 crossover rear suspensions. Capable of absorbing nasty moguls and melting away chattering trail stutters, it’s equally adept at carving up fresh powdery meadows and snaking through tightly treed forests with ease. Paired with a confident and capable RAS 3 front suspension, riders are hard pressed to find terrain the 2021 Backcountry doesn’t like.

Now even more riders will be able to live the 50-50 crossover adventure in 2021 thanks to the new Backcountry Sport. This new entry point into the crossover market offers all the advantages of the responsive REV Gen4 platform and a modernized Rotax 600 EFI 2-stroke engine focused on reliability and ease of ownership. It’s the ideal way to begin exploring winter beyond what’s standard.

2021 Backcountry Sport

As was pointed out by Ski-Doo officials, the Backcountry Sport replaces the Summit Sport, which featured a carb engine.

Winter escapes are more accessible than anyone thought. With advanced sleds and modernized engines, even the most budget-conscience buyer can find a winter adventure worthy of the investment.

Built on the industry’s most responsive platform in the REV Gen4, riders can choose their style of ride by the day, or even by the hour. When it comes to a sled as versatile as the Backcountry Sport, that style can change as they grow in ability and confidence.

That rider confidence is inspired by the capable cMotion rear suspension and RAS 3 front suspension. Both tackle on- and off-trail terrain with ease and offer both comfort and performance. Making the ride even easier is the new Rotax 600 EFI. A modern, electronically fuel-injected powerplant that’s easy to own, it delivers awesome acceleration and a high fun factor at 85 hp. It’s also lighter on the wallet with class-leading economy and longevity for many years of winter wandering to come.

Platform

REV Gen4 platform: The REV Gen4 crossover platform delivers effortless handling for both on- and off-trail riding. It’s crisp in the corners, and confidently precise through rough terrain when on-trail. Playfully agile, and well balanced thanks to its centralized mass for an ultra-responsive ride off-trail.

Suspension

cMotion 146 rear suspension: The cMotion 146 takes the best from the trail rMotion and mountain tMotion suspensions and puts them in one crossover-specific rising-rate suspension for a true 50-50 riding experience. Bump compliance is stellar because of separate spring and shock motion ratios—a design feature of all Ski-Doo rear suspensions. Cornering is razor sharp thanks to tipped rails that allow the 146-inch skid to crisply handle turns with the feel of a much shorter track, and maintain high trail speeds. Rigid front and rear arms in an uncoupled design provide excellent weight transfer enabling the sled to respond immediately to rider input for off-trail riding.

RAS 3 crossover front suspension: Strikes the best balance between trail and mountain sled geometry and width to deliver great trail precision and off trail agility. State-of-the-art unequal length A-arm front suspension for the 50/50 rider.

HPG rear shock: Extremely capable high pressure gas shock by KYB.

Key Features

Ergo-Step side panels: Design offers natural progression to three positions for different cornering styles, including an extreme-forward position.

Open toe-hold: True freedom to choose. Enables rider to naturally pivot their outside foot outward in aggressive cornering. For more locked-in, secure feeling, alternative toe-hold accessories available to customize the fit for all styles.

Deep snow running boards: Snow easily passes through with 40 percent wider openings at the front. Flat foot position with 30 percent more grip for more comfort and control, and 0.8 lb weight reduction.

15x146x1.6 inch (38x327x4.1 cm) Cobra track: Features a combination of flexible cupped lugs for superior off-trail performance and more rigid lugs for added traction on hard-packed snow.

Pilot DS 2 skis: Single-keel with excellent sidehilling bite, thanks to thin outer edges. Narrow and thin, yet stiff. Shorter behind its complementary spindle with flat tail for easier countersteering and sidehilling.

Adjustable ski stance: Easily change from wide (40.1 inch/102 cm) for trails to narrow (38.4 inch/97.5 cm) for boondocking and carving.

pDrive primary clutch with clicker adjustment: Fast and friction-free dual rollers transfer torque in place of traditional sliding buttons. Oversized rollers with needle bearings, wide based flyweights and a shaft-on-shaft design emphasize smooth operation and long life. Clicker ramps allow easy adjustment for top rpm. Ultra-responsive shifting, impressive rpm consistency, lightweight and maintenance-free. Fixed sheave is finned to circulate more air—paired with new CVT cover delivers better air flow and cooling.

Brembo disc brake: Fade resistant, world-renown stopping power from hydraulic brake. Braided stainless steel line delivers a direct, solid feel and greater braking efficiency.

Rotax Electronic Reverse (RER): Push-button reverse that adds virtually no weight. Trail performance seat: Narrow design eases shifting from side-to-side and front-to-back. Wider and flat rear section adds comfort.

Aluminum handlebar with rigid grab strap: Ride confidently with strong, lightweight and trick-looking U-shape bars with J-hooks. Rigid grab strap offers more leverage and in tricky maneuvers.

4.5-inch digital display: All-digital LCD gauge cluster with flatter viewing angle for an easy-to-read info center whether standing or sitting.

Glove box: 1 gallon (4 L) storage box is ideal for storing a spare pair of goggles or gloves. Improved seal to keep moisture out. Wiring and marked cut-out for USB and 12V accessory outlets.

Accessory-ready: Designed from the factory for easy installation of more than 150 Ski-Doo accessories for the REV Gen4 platform, including LinQ cargo system, skid plates, side panel vents, auxiliary LED light, GPS receiver, 1+1 seating system, alternative windshields and more.
