Q I am looking to buy an old Yamaha for drag racing purposes. What was the first year that Yamaha came out with the SRX and did the engine always have power valves?–

A 1998 was the first year of the SRX 700. At the time Yamaha said it featured “the most advanced triple triple in the industry with the highest horsepower in its class.” The motor had TM33 flat-slide carbs, triple pipes and ceramic composite cylinder plating. Yes, it had electronically controlled exhaust power valves too with a self-cleaning feature to prevent carbon buildup. At the time, this was one of the most highly prized performance sleds on the market and you will still find SRX sleds at ice, grass, and asphalt drags around the country.
