This is a sister system to West Yellowstone, separated only by a mountain range. Island Park offers 500 miles of groomed and likely double that of unmarked paths. The area is home to Two Top, Mt. Jefferson, Mesa Falls, Big Springs and other popular destinations that snowmobilers never seem to get tired of.
Those who ride Island Park know this area can stand all alone when it comes to snowmobiling. Yes, it is an island unto itself. Island Park has nearly 100 more miles of groomed trails than does West Yellowstone and it receives more snow--nearly 86 inches more each winter--than its Montana neighbor.
Because of the size of the Island Park riding area, it offers a diversity few others can match. There’re rolling hills, steep mountain faces and snow-filled bowls, hundreds of miles of groomed trails and hundreds of miles of ungroomed trails, open meadows and plenty of tree riding. Island Park sits in the crater of an extinct volcano and is surrounded by mountains on the east, west and north and the Snake River Plain to the south.
For those who would like to experience the trails on the other side of the Continental Divide, they are easily accessed by a handful of Island Park trails. A good day’s ride would be to begin your ride in Island Park, ride to West Yellowstone, MT, where you can eat lunch and be back in IP by supper. You should take time to play along the way, though, as there are a number of places to dive off the trail and experience the light, dry snow Island Park is famous for. Many riders like to claim they can play all day in Island Park and never cross a trail once, there’s just that much off-trail riding.
