Most snotels showing 50 to 60 percent of median moisture. Not a good start.

Not good at all, hopefully these next few days will end up on the higher side of what is predicted. Everything is missing the big horns so far this year.

“Avalanche Rescue Skills” New classroom session with hands-on transceiver use, demonstrations, Powerpoint and video. This is the next step in classroom education. Emphasis is on avalanche transceivers and rescue techniques. Class will start with a quick review on avalanche accidents, how to prevent getting caught and reading avalanche forecasts. Will progress to more advanced avalanche rescue techniques. Students should bring their avalanche gear to class (beacon, shovel, probe, pack). We will be learning transceiver and probing skills in class.

Bring your transceiver and riding partners.

Yesterday I saw two trailers of sleds headed up the north side, one guy was buying his registration at the gas station and look like he meant business.
So today I had to go see for my self

There is still no snow unless you want to go sledding down the hill at the bowl

Here is right out of bears entrance

Here is just to the west of bear

Looking up Owens cr

Drove half way up Owens but the frozen mud ruts from some a hole camper or hunter kept me from continuing

I have never seen the fence covered up where he took that picture west of the lodge. However I will repeat what I said before, the snotels sites are showing 40 to 60 percent of normal moisture of the snowpack which means that there is about 40 to 60 percent snowpack. We will not be riding till February at this rate. Big horns haven't had one good storm to start the winter.

Don't know why but they are closing 14a on dec 1. There is barely enough snow up there to make a drift.

Maybe in another month or two it will actually be snow that keeps you from driving wherever you want.

did you even make a mile?

I was up there early a few years ago, got stopped by the forest service cause there wasn't adequate depth. I think he said had to be 6" of actual base. probably get a ticket for what there now.

just a word of caution

What a crappy year. Starting to look for somewhere other than bear to go for after christmas.
I would suggest you book somewhere else. Drove over the south end yesterday and it looks pitiful. We well be lucky to have enough to ride by new years.

12"-14"+ for Burgess Junction on the way. That should help get things rolling on the north end a bit.

Just spent the last week by Bald Mtn and Lil Baldy bouncing around on super-thin snowpack. Hope that will change soon! I knew it was going to be thin but the very bony riding was disappointing.

The good news is that the Wyoming High Country Lodge has new managers. They are committed to making sledders happy with a new "made-to-order" menu and an dramatically expanded beer and liquor selection. They are still doing a buffet but for those of us who want a freshly made burger and fries - no problem!

Looking forward to the winter. Just need a decent dump.
