I have been going out to Snowy Range with a sled since 2004, but now taking the family to rent side by sides out of Albany in August. Looking for some tips/rules and pointers for dirt riding from anyone that done the summer thing, coming from a sled rider. Thanks.

There are a lot of FS roads that you can hit out of the Albany area - The main road (500) out of Albany is fairly busy so we try to only stay on it when we have to. Like sledding - we like to stay on the less traveled roads to avoid crowds - plus you will have a lot better chance to see wildlife. If it hasn't rained in a while it will be dusty - make sure you have good eye protection etc. Albany will have the ORV maps when you rent, pick out a good loop that you want to try and then branch off when you see the FS/Logging roads. Keep an eye on the weather, the rain/thunder storms can come up quickly, but typically don't last long. The closed roads are clearly marked and blocked by the FS.

Just one think I will advise you on. I have been going up there since 1992 sledding and it looks WAY different when out there in the summer. I got a little relaxed and before yah know it took a wrong turn. Just need to pay a bit more attention but it is awesome up there! Have fun and be safe.

Pics from Labor Day weekend- it was busy up there, rain each night kept the dust down where we were riding.

Are there any more "advanced" trails there? I've been a few times on the RZR but seems like most of the trails are just dirt road style. There's a few little offshoots we've found but they are short and/or dead end.

Yup, out of HQ park to the north past Queally, over to Cecil Park, back along the base of hidden ridge then back out to HQ. 'bout a 40 mile jaunt, it's a hoot.

Might go this weekend to check that out. We're narrowing down our choices but this is the closest one (vs. Grand Lake, Meeker, Steamboat, etc). Thanks
