A friend called today and said his 2000 MM was losing coolant during every ride but there are no traces on the snow when he stops. The coolant drops about half way. I'm thinking maybe a head gasket. I have not had a chance to look at his sled nor do I know much about Yamahas. Are these MM's prone to this loss of AF? Is there some place else the coolant can go on this machine?

That engine uses a multi layer steel head gasket, 3 layers of steel riveted together. They almost never leaked in stock form but lots of people would drill out the rivet and only run one or two layer to get some free HP. Sometimes this would cause them to leak.

You could also do a pressure test on the system and check for any leaks. Eric

My 02 is dripping out the valve for the heated carbs. If I fiddle with it it stops. If his is really bad it could be pissing out. When you say half way like the engine is half empty, or half the overflow bottle?

coolant leak

Bypass or get rid of the valve on the air box. Mine fell apart and leaked.
